Association with the
Foundation for A Course in Miracles
The Foundation for Inner Peace is closely associated with the Foundation for A Course in Miracles, a teaching facility in Temecula, California. Founded in 1983 by Dr. Kenneth Wapnick and Gloria Wapnick as an Academy and Retreat Center for A Course in Miracles, it was established "...to help students of A Course in Miracles deepen their understanding of its thought system, conceptually and experientially, so that they may be more effective instruments of the Holy Spirit's teaching in their own lives. Since learning forgiveness without experiencing it is empty, one of the Foundation's specific goals is to help facilitate the process whereby people may be better able to know that their own sins are forgiven, and that they are truly loved by God. Thus is the Holy Spirit able to extend His love through them to others."
The Foundation for A Course in Miracles, as a teaching center, was conceived and has always functioned as a school for A Course in Miracles under the direction of Kenneth and Gloria Wapnick—husband and wife—who serve as both administrators and faculty members.
Dr. Kenneth Wapnick - A clinical psychologist, Kenneth's association with the Course dates back to 1972, when he met Helen Schucman and William Thetford in New York City, shortly after the scribing of the Course was completed there. He then worked closely with Helen in editorially organizing the Course manuscript and preparing it for publication.
Gloria Wapnick - Gloria was a social studies teacher and Dean of students in a Bronx (New York) High School. She has been working with the Course since 1977, when she began a group to study and discuss the Course's teachings.
The Institute and Teaching Center - The Foundation is situated on Buecking Drive in Temecula, California, right off I-15, approximately 60 miles north of San Diego, and 75 miles south of Los Angeles. This central location makes it accessible to four major airports: Lindberg Field in San Diego, LAX in Los Angeles, John Wayne in Irvine, and Ontario International in Ontario. This location makes the Foundation very accessible for students who wish to attend its educational programs. While the Foundation does not have lodging or dining facilities, motels and restaurants abound in the local area.
Institute for Teaching Inner Peace Through A Course in Miracles - Early in 1995, the Foundation for A Course in Miracles was granted approval by the State of New York to form a new organization, the Foundation for Teaching Inner Peace Through A Course in Miracles. The new Foundation—renamed Institute to more properly denote its educational purpose—was incorporated under the New York State Education Law, and was chartered by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York. It continues to function as an Institute under the aegis of the Foundation for A Course in Miracles, and reflects that Foundation's teaching function.
This teaching organization, however, does not mean that only those who study A Course in Miracles at the Institute in Temecula can ever hope to understand and experience the Course. Clearly, and as any student knows, A Course in Miracles is specifically designed as a self-study curriculum without gurus, ministers or spiritual leaders, so that a devoted student would be guided by his or her own Inner Teacher. The Institute and Teaching Center in Temecula, therefore, does not aim to substitute for the individual's study and practice. Unquestionably, that is the clear responsibility of each student of A Course in Miracles. And certainly the Institute does not seek to replace—nor can any person or organization—the Holy Spirit or Jesus as teacher.
To further clarify the relationship of the Foundation for Inner Peace with the Foundation for A Course in Miracles, then, lines between the two Foundations have always been fluid, which reflect their shared purpose and common origins, and which form the background for their association. For example, this association provided the step for creating and organizing the Institute for Teaching Inner Peace through A Course in Miracles. Unity of function in this regard also facilitates the translation of A Course in Miracles into other languages, where the administration and supervision is handled by the Foundation for Inner Peace, while the teaching and training of translators is carried out by the Foundation for A Course in Miracles. Equally, the preparation of the second edition of A Course in Miracles and of the Concordance of A Course in Miracles were collaborative ventures of the two Foundations. In addition, through an arrangement between these two organizations begun several years earlier, in 1996 the Foundation for Inner Peace assigned and conveyed the copyright of A Course in Miracles—as well as the service mark title A Course in Miracles—to the Foundation for A Course in Miracles.
In 2004 the copyright for the following sections of the Course as found in the original "Criswell Edition" were placed in the public domain by the Federal Court: "Text", "Workbook for Students" and "Manual for Teachers." The Foundation for A Course in Miracles still administers the copyright for all of the changes introduced in the Second Edition and Third Edition as well as "The Preface," "Clarification of Terms," "Psychotherapy": Purpose, Process and Practice," and "The Song of Prayer," as well as The Concordance, and all the translations of the Course.
