The Translation Program
Summary
In 1976 A Course in Miracles made its public debut in America. English-speaking foreign students discovered it and began to share its teachings with friends and families in their native countries. History and Evolution
Because the teachings of A Course in Miracles are universally spiritual
and globally appealing, it naturally followed that the Course would
eventually be translated from the original English into other languages.
Soon after A Course in Miracles made its public debut in 1976, English-speaking
students yearned to read and study the Course in their own languages.
To facilitate their own studying and teaching efforts, some began
to translate portions into their native tongues. However, the stewards
of the Course, the Foundation for Inner Peace, soon realized that
such partial translations might lack consistency, misinterpret or
misstate the Course’s original meaning and message, thereby confusing
other students who were drawn to its profound transforming and healing
ideas.
Due to this growing international interest and demand for specific
languages, the Foundation for Inner Peace established a translation
program in 1982 under the joint direction of Dr. Kenneth Wapnick of
the Foundation for A Course in Miracles (FACIM) and Dr. William Whitson
of the Foundation for Inner Peace. The first translation, a Spanish
edition published in 1992, was soon followed by editions in German,
Portuguese and Hebrew. Those early translations paved the way for
worldwide circulation of the Course in the following editions:
Afrikaans, Bulgarian, Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch,
Finnish, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Norwegian,
Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovene, Spanish
and Swedish.
Additional languages currently in the translation process and soon to become available worldwide include Korean, Hungarian and Japanese. Other languages will be included as qualified translators become ready for the task.
Translators
We learned early on that fully qualified translators must be totally prepared for such a monumental task and willing to commit to it for at least five years. Our translators are all students who have studied A Course in Miracles for several years and have translated other spiritual materials into their native language.
Adopt-A-Language Program
In 1995, the Foundation for Inner Peace saw an ever increasing need for language translation funding. Our Adopt-A-Language Program enables Foundation supporters and students of the Course from around the world to help make the translations possible.
Ongoing Support
You may notice that some of the languages we list for support are already published. Once a language "goes out into the world" the translators usually do not stop their work. Many of them go on to translate additional materials such as the Supplements and our Foundation's website. Some of them also actively manage their own websites and produce additional teaching materials in audio, text and video. We are in the midst of recording the Workbook Lessons in five languages, the audio of which will be a feature on the respective international websites and will also be made available on DVD for purchase by students. Generous donations thus help continue the dissemination of the Course throughout the world.
