TO MOTHER FROM HELEN

A Monkey Story

Tommy had long silky hair and loved to jump and stand on the swing in the backyard. All his friends were monkeys like himself and he liked to play with them when he was not swinging on the swing in the yard. One day Tommy was out walking when he met an ostrich and this ostrich was very proud and held his head very high up so that Tommy could not see it at all. Tommy soon thought of a way to stop the ostrich from being so proud. He said to himself, “This ostrich is a good runer, (sic) but I have thought out a way of stoping (sic) his proudnes.” (sic) Then he asked the ostrich to have a race with him the next day, and the one that one (sic) it had a right to be proud. Tommy went out and while he was going home he met an elefant (sic) and he asked he (sic) to come with him the next day to the field. And the ostrich went home very happily because he knew he could beet (sic) the monkey. The next day the elephant and the ostrich and Tommy met at the field. The elephant hid behind a tree. Then the race began. The ostrich was way ahead of the monkey when the elephant jumped out in front of him. So he hid his head in the ground. The monkey ran on and won the race so ever after that when ostriches see strange things they hide their heads for fear it may the (sic) an elephant.
